Smart Home Automation Management

What are Automation and Smart Systems?

Smart home automation enables you to have remote control of your home through electronic means, as well as the devices, equipment and appliances inside and outside of your home or office.

There are several leading manufacturers that have already developed smart products for homes and various control systems that enable their automation. Smart lighting networks fit into the home automation trend and will change the way you light your home, forever.

Home automation is the use of one or more computers to control basic home functions and features automatically and sometimes remotely. An automated home is sometimes called a smart home. A smart home or building is a home or building, which is equipped with special structured wiring to enable occupants to remotely control or program an array of automated home electronic devices by entering a single command. For example, a homeowner on vacation can use a Touchtone phone to arm a home security system, control temperature gauges, switch appliances on or off, control lighting, program a home theatre or entertainment system, and perform many other tasks.

How can a smart system benefit me?

Control/Personalisation

By installing appliances in your house, such as a smart oven or a Nest Learning Thermostat, you can now use apps on your mobile device to enjoy complete control of your home’s functions from anywhere in the world. Did you leave your home and forget to turn your oven off? You can quickly and easily power off these appliances in seconds from the respective accompanying apps.

There are no limitations to the apps that are coming to market every day. Developers have created apps and devices to control home stereos, water usage, lighting, lawn care, garage doors, your dog’s food dish, and even grocery shopping – all easily and readily controlled by the phone you already have in your pocket.

Health and Safety

Smart homes don’t just allow us to avert accidental house fires from unattended ovens. These homes also allow us to keep our loved ones safe. Security systems can be installed that allow owners to monitor the comings and goings of guests and alert you when suspicious activity is detected. Doors can be locked, security systems armed, and cameras monitored from your phone, creating a safer and more secure environment for you and your family.

For those of you with children, or those caring for elderly parents, these tools can make your life exponentially easier and give you peace of mind. Alerts can be sent to your phone when members of your family leave your house, and you can even keep track of where they go after they leave.

Accessibility

If you have friends or family members who are elderly or disabled, you know how difficult even the most basic everyday task can be for them. Smart home technology can greatly increase their quality of life, and utilizing voice commands can make the learning curve much easier for someone unfamiliar with computers.

Setting up automated systems for activities like lawn care removes unnecessary stress from the lives of these individuals. As the technology moves forward, more and more difficult tasks will become accessible, improving flexibility and independence in housing for people who might not be fully capable of taking care of their homes on their own.

Energy Efficiency

While many benefits of a smart home include ease and accessibility, there are even more perks to enjoy. Smart home technology allows appliances to work with the least amount of energy needed. For example, induction cook-top stoves now have the intelligence to heat exclusively when a metal pan is placed on top of it. No more burners running uncovered and no more pans being overheated. Stove tops can even manage a perfect boil while using the least amount of energy possible.

Saving money on that water bill has also never been easier. Certain faucet technology can maximize shower water usage by shaping the individual droplets of water to create a fuller and fulfilling shower experience while still using less water than the everyday shower head.

Cost Effective/Affordability

Saving money with smart home technologies is simple and easy. Timers and monitors make sure you only use the money and energy you want, and incredibly intelligent occupation detectors insure these products are only active when users are present.

To further your savings, the addition of solar power or other energy transmuting devices can save costs, and help you become more self-sufficient.

Not only do these improvements save on your bill payments, the resale value of your home increases with each addition of these technologies. It may be a chunk of change up front, but these additions soon pay for themselves.

Comfort

One of the best parts of a Smart House is that you can set it up to be absolutely perfect for you. Have the lighting set up at just the right brightness, not too bright but not too dark either. You can even set it so that the lights slowly dims brighter instead of a sudden flash of blinding light you usually get or set up which lights/lamps turn on in the room depending on your activity.

You can set some soft music start when your alarms go off in the morning so that you wake up in positive atmosphere and not dreading the day. You can place speakers in different rooms to be set to play different songs at different volumes so you can always listen to what you want where ever you are in the house.

You can also have the temperature of the house kept at your optimal temperature. The heating and air conditioner can be remotely controlled by a thermostat so that the house will never be too cold or too hot for you to be in.

Security

There are countless ways that a smart home could be keeping you secure at home. You can have motion sensors to detect movement after a determined time, such as at night or whilst you are at work. If the motion detectors are alerted you can be sent a notification to your smart phone, and/or have lights come on to make it seem as though someone is awake and scare the potential burglar away.

You can have ‘detectors’ on windows and doors, so you know if one has been opened without you being aware or one has been smashed.

A lot of smart homes have CCTV cameras installed that will allow you to look through any camera using your smart device or wall terminal. You can set sections of the screen to detect movement so that a pet or a tree in the wind does not set off the alarm.

If you install ‘smart’ fire alarms you can receive notifications of potential fires whether you are in the house or out at work. If you know it to be a false alarm you can turn off the alarm at a press of a screen, instead of climbing up on a chair and stretching to reach the button on the fire alarm itself.

As a bonus if you ever go away on holiday you can get these notifications for fires or burglaries can be sent to a neighbour or family member instead of yourself.

Convenience/ Peace of mind

If you install ‘smart’ fire alarms you can receive notifications of potential fires whether you are in the house or out at work. If you know it to be a false alarm you can turn off the alarm at a press of a screen, instead of climbing up on a chair and stretching to reach the button on the fire alarm itself.

What can I do with a Smart System?

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Intelligent heating and cooling systems solve problems traditional systems can’t. For example, Building occupants and owners don’t want to waste time fiddling with the heat or air conditioning, so smart HVAC systems “learn” where and how much heat or air to bring to each section of the building.

Building owners and corporations waste a great deal of money on inefficient, ineffective HVACs.

Systems with smart sensors, both in the building and in the units themselves, can comprehensively monitor external sources and interior functionality so the system can maintain its efficiency.

The ventilation system directs air where and when it’s needed in a building. In new commercial buildings, complex ventilation systems are usually modelled beforehand. In residential construction, a licenced engineer typically needs to design the HVAC system, which includes ventilation design. The overall goal is to provide air to rooms that are occupied and to keep the temperature in those rooms at a comfortable level.

Smart thermostats typically measure temperature, but really smart thermostats can read temperature, humidity, occupancy, and other variable. These features allow the thermostat to make better decisions about how to adjust room temperature and setbacks. Part of the reason it is wise to bring in an auditor is that room discomfort may have little to do with temperature, and everything to do with latent heat, which is the heat that is caused by humidity. This may be due to air infiltration or poor HVAC design.

The goal of smart HVAC is to have a system that knows what’s going on in a building, keeps everything properly cooled, saves money, and mitigates any issues associated with misuse. While everyone is familiar with buildings, they often underestimate just how complex of systems they are. Smart HVAC systems can help reduce some of this complexity for the occupants and operators. By offloading a little bit of the complexity to smart HVAC systems, you’re well on your way to creating a better environment for the people who occupy your building.

Security & Surveillance systems

A smart home security system is a set of an internet-connected security gadgets, which typically include a combination of wireless security cameras, sirens, motion detectors, door locks, and sensors that detect when a door or window has been opened.  The specific gadgets bundled together to make a security system vary between the different kits and brands, but most manufacturers offer a range of different kits, plus the option to buy additional compatible gadgets separately.  All smart home security systems are driven by a central internet-connected ‘hub’, which wirelessly connects to and communicates with a smartphone app and the other components of the system. Using the app on your smartphone or tablet, you can monitor your home by receiving alerts, viewing photos or video taken by a security camera and, in some cases, control bits of your home such as lighting, heating or appliances.

Audio systems

Lighting

Smart lighting incorporates many technologies so that either indoor or outdoor lights will work automatically under certain conditions. Different smart lighting networks do different things, but some of the more popular solutions feature smart lights that are capable of instantly switching on when someone enters a room or changing colour when something occurs, for example.

Imagine your house has 50 lights, and each light is normally controlled by the flick of a switch. Smart lighting eliminates the need for you to get up and flick that switch. The network does all the work for you, automatically, though you can still program the lights to respond as you wish. Smart lights often feature sensors too, so they can identify people and things like when they need light, as well as how much they may need.
